Energy efficiency leads to lower monthly power bills and lower carbon emissions. This summer EOS Eco-Energy is launching a program to help increase the energy efficiency of homes across Tantramar. “The program will see EOS staff install LED light bulbs, high efficiency showerheads and hot water pipe wrap,” explains EOS’s executive director Amanda Marlin.
Lighting can account for more than 15% of the electricity used in a home. LED bulbs use 80% less energy and last 25X longer than regular incandescent bulbs (about 20 years!). An individual LED bulb can save about $6/year in power costs alone when compared to an incandescent. High efficiency showerheads decrease energy needs by adding air to the water or reducing the flow rate. There is the same amount or more pressure than a standard showerhead, but with about 40% less water. Insulating hot water pipes and using high efficiency showerheads can help save energy and money too because hot water accounts for about 20% of a home’s energy use. EOS summer student Dylan Wooley-Berry adds, “EOS’s program saves money for local residents, and saves energy, water and emissions.”
To qualify, participants must live in the Tantramar, NB region and pay for their own power and hot water costs. Only incandescent bulbs and showerheads with a flow rate of 2.5gpm or more can be replaced. Priority will be given to low-income residents ($28,500 for one-bedroom or 1 person, $33,500 for two-bedroom or family of 3-4, or $40,000 for a three-bedroom or family of 4 or more). The program is free but places are limited.
