Climate Change Education

and Engagement (2013-14)

Climate change adaptation has quickly made its way to the forefront of community discussions in the Tantramar region (Port Elgin, Sackville, Dorchester and Memramcook). Citizens need to better understand the science behind climate change in order to mitigate threats and adapt to changes. The impact of climate change also presents our society with an important opportunity. Knowledge is power and if we do what it takes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for the impacts that we see are already underway, our communities will undergo a transformational change in the process towards a more sustainable and resilient future. Thus, EOS Eco-Energy recognized the need for a collaborative and strategic education and outreach initiative for the Tantramar region and all its demographic groups.

Goals and Objectives

The goals of the project were to continue to raise awareness (in a collaborative and strategic manner with all parts of our communities) about climate changes, as well as the need to mitigate threats and adapt for the future. In order to achieve this, the project had the following objectives:

  1. Develop and implement an educational strategy on climate change adaptation, including the 2nd annual climate change week.
  2. Work with municipal governments and communities across Tantramar to commit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2021. This work is part of the Partners for Climate Protection program.
  3. Coordinate information sharing with the Tantramar Climate Change Collaborative, including hosting the 2nd annual collaborative workshop.
  4. Develop a best practices guide for community engagement on climate change outreach and adaptation.
