Due to its low-lying coastal location, Tantramar is one of the most vulnerable areas to climate change in New Brunswick. EOS Eco-Energy has helped Tantramar communities develop emissions reduction plans and climate change adaptation plans. During 2019-2020, EOS continued to focus on the implementation of these plans. Specifically, EOS influenced behaviour changes by learning about, promoting and using community-based social marketing (CBSM) techniques. EOS conducted public education on climate and energy issues (workshops on saving energy, a Sustainable Home Show, info booths, school visits, etc). EOS helped reduce emissions with a solar panel bulk installation program and helped Tantramar communities track their progress in the Partners for Climate Protection program. Finally, our region must continue to adapt to climate changes. Thus, EOS offered a backwater valve bulk purchase program to reduce sewage backups during increasingly common flood events. EOS continued to organize the Chignecto Climate Change Collaborative and developed an informative brochure to promote the benefits of collaboration. When public education, adaptation and emissions reduction activities are combined, they help build resiliency in the face of climate change and contribute to safe, thriving and strong communities.
EOS received funding support from the NB Environmental Trust and Westmorland-Albert Action for this project.
